It’s almost here…the big V Day. But don’t worry, we’ve got you covered.

We realise that Valentine’s Day can be pretty expensive and you feel forced to splash out on cliched dinners, trendy bars or top shows. It doesn’t help either that all the above have been known to hike up their prices for Valentine’s Day as they know people will pay for it. But here at LDG we love a bit of Valentines and we know that most of you will be looking for something a bit different. Here are just a few thoughts for you to mull over…

Valentine's Day London 2013 Bleeding Heart Restaurant

Looking for something extra special? Here are a few of our favourite picks

Romantic Restaurants

Intimate and beautiful, Clos Maggiore is our absolute fave romantic restaurant. Sit in the conservatory for the full effect where you’ll sit amongst vines climbing the walls intertwined with twinkling fairy lights while you are treated to top food with great service.

Galvin at Windows is the classiest of our picks, sitting atop the Hilton on Park Lane. Try to go at sunset and sit near the window so you can enjoy seeing the sun set over London while you eat your Michelin star meal.

With hearts adorning the lights and even carved into the butter, Bleeding Heart is romantic to the core. Famous for being the place where Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn had their wedding feast, you’ll love the historic feel to this place. Serving delicious food and offering friendly service, Bleeding Heart is a real find.

Theatre

If it’s not restaurants you’re after and a show is more what you’re up for then we can’t recommend Matilda enough. It really is laugh out loud funny and the kids in it are top drawer. It will have you both giggling the whole way through.

If you don’t fancy that then try the 39 Steps – delightfully slapstick, this story is set in wartime England and is played by just four characters. It’s usually possible to find cheap tickets to this as well – always useful.

If they both sound like not your bag then we’ve got one more recommendation. One Man Two Guvnors was a breath of fresh air when it came out in what was otherwise a rather tired looking West End. A mixture of improvisation and script, there is an air of comic freedom to this show, where you feel like no two shows are ever the same. It has us crying with laughter and I just can’t imagine anyone not enjoying it.

Something Different

Never letting us down, the BFI is releasing a real classic just in time for Valentine’s Day. Breakfast at Tiffany’s tells the story of a quirky New York socialist Holly Golightly who intrigues her new neighbour, struggling writer Paul Varjak. In public Holly is sexy and sophisticated always slitting through parties, but when she’s alone with Paul she becomes sweetly vulnerable and much more than she seems. Unfortunately the BFI Southbank will not be screening it but 13 cinemas across London will be and you can find cinema listings here. Breakfast at Tiffany’s will also screening at cinemas across the uk.

The historic 5* Royal Horseguards Hotel is putting on a special “Naughtea Afternoon Tea” for the Valentines period. This deliciously sinful afternoon tea has been designed for two to share by the fireplace in their beautiful lounge, where your table will be decorated with a red rose and candles and includes a glass of champagne. For full details of this £45 per head treat see their website

Then again if you hate the sound of all the above and the thought of upcoming Valentine’s day then try out new ping pong bar Bounce – they are hosting an ‘Anti Valentine’s Day party’ where banned items include slow dancing, red roses and use of pet names! If you and your date hate all that forced romance then this is for you.

As for me, I’m being taken to Vanilla Black for Valentines Day, an “inspirational” vegetarian restaurant – I’ll keep you posted with how it goes…
